Nomen est omen
Naming of parts was discussed last week in class, on the differences between the following:
- Typeface
- Font
And also:
- Letterform
- Typeform
- Glyph
- Character
The naming of parts seems important, but chatting about type, the terms are all used almost interchangeably. However, it is important to be more precise when writing about type. I’ll have to consider the differences (and what other terms are relevant) and make another post on this, I think.
I also clarified my understanding of the display stack:
- Canvas (Cairo)
- Text Layout (Pango, QT, Graphite, ATSUI/CoreText, Uniscribe)
- Rendering (freetype)
